Real Parents of Genius

Shout out to some “Real Parents of Genius”.  You know who you are, Mr. & Mrs. “It’s All About Winning”.  NEWS FLASH:  WINNING IS AN ATTITUDE! And your attitude sucks.  What happened to sportsmanship & teaching kids that it’s all how they play the game, not who comes in first place?  It must have been a proud parenting moment when you high-fived your kid for talking smack on the field to the girl who just hit a DOUBLE off of your pitcher.  Oh, and kudos to the way you encouraged your team to “defend” their bases (aka push the girls off the base).  That kind of parenting breeds bullies.  Nice work.  Now your job is left to the rest of us to clean up your mess.

But I do have to give you props for volunteering to coach your daughter’s team.  It takes serious commitment and those girls are lucky to have you as a mentor.  Who better than to have a dad on the field teaching a bunch of EIGHT YEAR OLDS how to break the rules & disrespect their opponents?  It’s not really about playing the game, having fun & building your skill sets.  And it’s not about finishing what you started, because who really cares about integrity anyway?  It’s about getting the trophy (hook or crook).  That’s the message I wanted to send to my own daughter, but didn’t quite have the right words.  So thank you for that.  But I think the high point of the day was when you packed up your team & walked out of the last game because you knew you didn’t earn a trophy (repeat:  earn a trophy).  Stellar performance.  Bravo.

Do you have any “Real Parents of Genius” moments involving your kids sports activities?  I’d love to hear all about it, so please chime in!
